5 Weird Facts about Diamonds

What you may know about diamonds is that it is a precious stone and adorning one on yourself just amplifies your beauty by about a hundred times. But there are some wacky lesser known facts about diamonds that will have you falling off the chair faster than you can say “diamond”!

Some common facts about diamonds are that the hardest substance and are made from crystallization of carbon.

#1 80% of the diamonds are not suitable for jewelry

You heard it right. Over 80% of mined diamonds are unsuitable to be cut and used as diamond stones in jewelry. The diamonds are too small or otherwise impure making them unfit for gemstones and better suited for industrial use.

#2 Ancient Greeks believed diamonds were splinters of stars fallen on Earth

The ancient Romans and Greeks had a lot of powerful beliefs about diamonds, including ideas that diamonds were the tears of the gods or possibly even splinters that had broken off of falling stars. Roman literature, which first made mention of diamonds in the first century AD, also stated that Cupid’s irresistible arrows were tipped with diamonds. Classical Greek philosopher Plato went even further to write about diamonds as living beings that embodied celestial spirits.

#3 Diamonds were first discovered in India

Yep, India shines bright like a diamond in this case. One can say, we shine because of the diamond we discovered! The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, although the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago.

#4 Diamonds can be made out of tequila.

A team of Mexican scientists found that the heated vapor from 80-proof (40% alcohol) tequila blanco, when deposited on a silicon or stainless steel substrate, can form diamond films.

#5 Under extreme high pressure, diamonds can be made from peanut butter.
